Purpose of theTokyo Traffic Accident Map
- This map shows where traffic accidents have taken place in your neighborhood and where they are frequent, as well as their characteristics, in ways that are easy to see. The map is meant to help you improve traffic safety.
Overview of the Tokyo Traffic Accident Map
- The Metropolitan Police Department's Traffic Division has created this Map based on data generated from a system called GIS (Geographic Information System). With our Map, you can easily see geographic distribution of the number of traffic accidents in Tokyo (excluding the Tokyo islands) with the help of various presentations of data, including traffic accident density mapping.
Definitions, legend and display of detailed information
- The "traffic accidents" in our Map refer to those involving personal injury and/or human death on the “road” as stipulated under the Road Traffic Act of Japan, caused by the traffic of vehicles, trams, and/or trains in Tokyo (excluding the Tokyo islands) .
- The traffic accidents involving motorcycles, the elderly, pedestrians, children, bicycles, or vehicles for business use, refer to those involving any of the above subject as a party to the accident, respectively. The “fatal accident” refers to any of the above traffic accident in which any of the party died within 24 hours following the accident.
- For the “All accidents” map as well as each map for accidents involving motorcycles, the elderly, pedestrians, children, bicycles, or vehicles for business use, respectively, our Map shows the density of accidents in different colors. Accident spots are indicated in dots, and fatal accidents with symbols
or
.
- By clicking on the fatal accident spot, the summary window pops up and you can see further information, including the outline, date and time and the detailed location of the accident (available in Japanese only).
Updating Information
- Our Map is, as a rule, updated every Thursday, reflecting the number of fatal traffic accidents that occurred during the seven days between Monday and Sunday of the previous week, as well as those confirmed during this period as a result of follow-up investigations.
Density mapping of traffic accidents
- Traffic accident density mapping is generated by computing with the kernel density estimation method, which allows visually understandable mapping.
- In this method, a map is divided into 100-meter-square cells and, for each cell, the number of accidents is estimated, taking account of those of the surrounding cells. The figures obtained in this way are then converted to show those per square kilometer.
- Density mapping is displayed in the color scale of white, green, yellow and red in order from lower to higher, but corresponding numbers may be different for each map by party to the accident. In other words, you cannot compare the number of accidents by color scale among different maps.
NOTE
- This Map is not intended to show degrees of responsibility or fault of any parties involved.
- Road descriptions in the diagram may be different from the actual condition for the convenience of simplifying the description of the scene.
- Not all the traffic regulations or traffic signals are reflected in the diagram.
- For the accidents that occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the following morning, the diagrams are presented in night-time format.
- Our Map is intended to help prevent traffic accidents by increasing awareness of the trend of the traffic accidents in Tokyo. Please be well advised of the above NOTE before use.
